The Cape Town based Amazon Web Services (AWS) Development Center plays a key role in building the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). EC2 is pioneering cloud computing by providing resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It gives any developer complete control of their computing resources and lets them run on Amazon’s proven computing environment.
The advertised position is within the team responsible for the EC2 customer facing APIs. We focus on achieving high availability, low latency and a consistent customer experience at scale. As such, we develop performant, high volume customer facing web services and integrate with many other EC2 service teams. If successful, you will join one of the teams responsible for building services and tools that are core components of the internal platforms that support our customer facing web services. Our focus is on delivering the best experience for software engineers on these platforms with varying but high degrees of availability, latency & scaling requirements. As an experienced engineer in this team, you will play an active role in developing high quality designs & solutions. You are consistently successful at working autonomously and in delivering software. You also work with your team to invent, design and build software that is stable and performant. You write code that is easy to understand and your solutions are pragmatic. You work directly with your team to regularly evaluate and raise the bar on their efficiency and overall delivery. Basic Qualifications • Nuts and bolts understanding of the web including HTTP, HTML, CSS, Javascript • Knowledge and appreciation of web standards • Knowledge of one or more Javascript frameworks e.g. JQuery, YUI, Ext-JS • Working knowledge of relational databases and back-end programming • Strong customer focus • 2+ years of industry experience in a software development environment • Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design • Computer Science fundamentals in data structures • Computer Science fundamentals in algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as C++, C#, Java, Python or Ruby • Demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals • Expertise in delivering high-quality, innovative applications • Strong analytical skills with excellent problem solving abilities. • Strong desire to build, sense of ownership, urgency, and drive. • Excellent written communication and verbal agility are strong assets. aws-sdesdm-ea Preferred Qualifications • At least a four year degree in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent • 2+ years of industry experience in a Linux environment.
